  Shako's

Up until 1812, British infantry wore the stovepipe shako with plume in front.

After 1812, the stovepipe shako was replaced with the Belgic shako (with false front and plume on the left).

Shakos were made of stout felt with a stamped brass plate.

The plates were of universal pattern often with the Regiments own badge stuck in the center to replace the Royal Cypher.

  Bearskin

The British Bearskin went through three major changes in size, shape and constuction methods.

The first was rather short at the back and resembled the shape of the previous cloth Mitre caps, and was basically constructed with hide and leather.

The second was similar in construction but is not so mitred, and resembles more of a tube type shape, it still retained the red top.

The third was basically the shape we associate with the British Guards units of today, it was constructed using a cane frame.
